Ardmore – the final Ramble!

On December 1st 2016, the Ramblers had a wonderful walk in Ardmore. The Ardmore Cliff walk is a very popular walk, and it was no surprise that there was a high turn-out of members for the final Ramble of 2016.

Since the RTAI Ambler/Rambler group decided at its January Think-in to re-name the Rambles as Hill Walks, the Ardmore Cliff Walk was actually the last Ramble!

After our climb up from the village of Ardmore, the group split into two; the more energetic opted to extend the walk to Goat Island, while the remainder of the group continued on the shorter route.

After the walk we had an excellent lunch at the Cliff House Hotel. We were very well catered for by the friendly staff, and the views and ambiance were second to none.

At the meal, flowers were presented to Velda as  a token of appreciation for all the work she has done in establishing such active walking groups. So many of our members have had enjoyable experiences on these days out! In reply, Velda acknowledged the contributions of others in helping with the recces, organisation and leading of the various walks, and she wished everyone a Happy Christmas and a Healthy and Active New Year.

Here is a slide-show of the day’s views.

Ramblers no more!

A very lively and positive meeting of Amblers and Ramblers was held at SMA centre, Wilton, on Monday 16th January 2017.

The meeting was attended by 33 people, with apologies from quite a few others. It was felt that the names “Amblers” and “Ramblers” are possibly confusing, with the result that the walks are sometimes being “blended” as well.

It was agreed that the Amblers will be the walks which are held over mostly flat ground, with some inevitable slopes, and that they will generally be of 1.5 to 2 hours duration. These walks will be notified by text message.

The new name agreed for  the Ramblers is the Hillwalkers. These walks will be more strenuous, but generally Grade C or D walks, of up to 4 hours duration . These walks will be notified by email. If you weren’t at the meeting and you haven’t already done so, please email Clare Shelly, to be included in the Hillwalkers list.   clareshelly.cs@gmail.com

Hillwalks will be notified by email in order that details of the walks can be elaborated on. It was agreed that details of all walks will be sent to Mags McCarthy for inclusion on the blog in advance of the walk.

There were plenty of suggestions as to where we might walk,  and when, so it was agreed that two sub committees would be formed: a Hillwalkers and an Amblers.

The Hillwalkers  committee comprises: Pat Crowley, Kathleen Lowney, Joan McCann, Sean McCarthy, Mags McCarthy, Clare Shelly.

The Amblers  committee comprises: Bart Bambury, Mary Fitzgerald, Marie Power.

Christmas Lunch at Hayfield Manor

On 10th December 2016 the ever-popular Christmas Lunch was held at Hayfield Manor. Thanks to Marie Dennehy  for organising this event.

Our choir entertained us with a lively selection of songs, as we sipped a warm drink in the foyer, on arrival. We were welcomed before the meal by Marie Power who wished a Happy Christmas to one and all. A guest pianist provided the seasonal backdrop to our afternoon, inspiring some of our choir members to burst into song!

Once again the meal was of a very high standard, and the staff were attentive to all our needs.

Here is a selection of photos taken at the lunch.

AGM and Annual Remembrance Mass

The Annual Mass of Remembrance was held in the Church of Christ Our Light, Ballincollig on Wednesday 23rd November 2016. Fr. Micheál Ó Loingsigh celebrated the Mass with us. The hymns were sung beautifully by our choir. Those attending the Mass were invited to light  a candle in remembrance of those they wished to pray for.

Later, at the AGM, it was agreed that the Mass and AGM would be held in the same building next year.

The incoming Committee for 2017 elected at AGM is as follows:

Chairperson: Pádraig Ó Conaill, Deputy Chairperson: Marie Power, Secretary: Marie Dennehy, Assistant Secretary/Treasurer: Claire Bradley. Committee Members: Mary Fitzgerald, Derry Keogh, Mags McCarthy, Marian O’Callaghan, Seán Radley, Frank Tobin.

Annual Convention: The committee members and Claire Shelley were delegated to attend Annual Convention in March 2017.
