The Ultimate BAR-BE Day Out!

All praise to Máire Lehane who organised the whole package: weather, location and grub! The route which was chosen was new to most and was filled with wondrous views of a hidden Co. Cork with glorious Kerry in a mere supporting role. The road from Macroom to Béal Átha an Ghaorthaigh, with its many twists and turns, seemed to invite us into a place of mystery and wonder.

The 32 who walked included some “new faces”, a sure sign that the RTAI is ever renewing itself with active new members. As we climbed ever higher, having left our cars c. 5 miles from the village, unripe blackberries were abundant. In the past, the alarming speed with which blackberries ripened was an indication that “Back to School Time” was imminent. In place of blackberries we had fully ripe and sweet black grapes from the Sheehy Vinery that were generously shared.

As we rested for our mini-picnic some of us were unimpressed that many of the visible windmills were on a “sos” too. With our ESB bills so high, as gas and oil are being expensively burned to keep our country running, it seemed a bit daft that the willing wind was being refused its part.

With mountains on every side, far down below us in a glacial valley, we spotted a “Goirtin Fliuch” reminding us of how lucky we were. When it was time to retrace our steps the prospect of the barbecue at Seartan’s was 100% effective as motivation. Like ponies nearing home, we almost trotted down the hills in record time.

The promising smells and growing hunger were the perfect sauce for the meal that followed. For those who like to be spoilt rotten the mention of the word “vegetarian” is a sure winner, I’m told ……..!!! A combination of hot food and salads expertly prepared and served by “fear an ti” satisfied every palate and animated conversation on all sides confirmed as much. The ambition bar had been set high and all boxes ticked. It was time for thanks and applause for Máire and supporting team. But she had one more rabbit to pull from her magic tin – a scrumptious biscuit cake!

P.S. Is seems that most of us did not get the memo: “Wear PINK for BAR-BIE”!
