On a gloriously sunny Summer’s day, thirty six RTAI walkers set off from Warren Strand car park on an odyssey, led by the highly organised Catherine Mc Carthy and ably assisted by Clare Shelly and her whistle! At the start, the steepest slope away from the beach got the heart pumping and leg muscles working …..thereafter, the walk along roads towards Castlefreke woods, was a doddle! Lovely conversations, beautiful scenery on the higher level and the unexpected sunshine really lifted the spirits. Before entering the cool shade of of the woods, we stopped to admire a beautiful garden and lodge house, chatting to the lady owner.
Climbing up to the High Cross, we took a welcome break and were completely engaged by the story of the Evans- Freke family, the Lords and Ladies Carbery, and Lady Mary’s monument to her young dead husband, recounted wonderfully by Fachtna, Catherine’s erudite husband. In the distance, we admired Castlefreke house, still under restoration. Further on, we passed Long Strand, Owenahincha and stopped at the Fish Basket, queuing patiently for our coffee fix. Back to the cars and off to the Celtic Ross Hotel, where twenty three hungry walkers were speedily served with sandwiches, lunch and refreshments. The stories bandied around this walker’s table were priceless and still cause me to smile.
A wonderful walk in a superb part of West Cork, glorious weather, good friends, what’s not to enjoy! Go raibh míle, Catherine, Fachtna agus Clare …and our photographer, Martin!
