2024 Charity Coffee Morning

On Friday 6 th December we held our annual Charity Coffee Morning in Silversprings
Clayton Hotel. This annual charity event has been held every December over the past 15
years or so, except during the Covid years. This year our nominated charities were Cork
Penny Dinners and Cuanlee,
two charities very well known to our members. You might
wonder how our charities are chosen… Well in advance of the event our Branch
Committee, consisting of 12 elected members, considers the various charities and,
following discussion and a vote, selects the two for that year. There is always a Cork-
based charity included.
56 members arrived at Silversprings, knowing that they would be safely home before the
impending Storm Darragh would arrive with its colourful variations. Some more of our
members, who were unable to be there in person, very generously sent along
contributions. As expected we were made very welcome by all at the hotel. The
downstairs restaurant was tastefully set up in an inviting and relaxing manner and
patrons settled in to numerous cups of coffee and tea plus the usual scone. All the while
some Committee members were busy checking and re-checking the Donation Box and
counting the cash – credit cards had a rest day! All in all the event realised over €2,000 and
the Committee decided to top it up so that Penny Dinners and Cuanlee will each receive
€1500. Míle buíochas.
Attendees set off for home hoping that Storm Darragh might somehow bypass Cork and
that the lucky prize-winners wouldn’t have their envelopes blown away. One very
fortunate punter didn’t have to worry about the last minute Christmas Cake, jealously
guarding Mary Cahill’s prized specimen – hopefully it hasn’t been eaten already! Beidh
cácá Nollag Mháire níos milse agus níos blasta ar Lá Nollag.
A special thank you to Mariska and all the staff in Silversprings for placing hotel
facilities at our disposal for the event and for sponsoring the tea/coffee and scone. And
of course we also thank Antoinette and Alan, who look after us so well during the year
at our monthly Coffee Mornings on the first Friday of each month.
Nollaig shona agus athbhliain faoí mhaise daoibh uilig.
Why not start off the New Year with our first Coffee Morning of 2025 on Friday 3 rd
January? Beidh fáilte is fiche romhat.
