Crossing the Dissour River on a Bespoke RTAI Bridge

Three cheers for the Office of Public Works who with perfect timing had a new bridge in place just as our 30 RTAI walkers approached! On an earlier visit to Glenbower Woods dramatic gales and floods had swept the old bridge away requiring a quick gear change to Plan B. Now, once we had crossed over, some O.P.W. workers insisted on photo-proof that we had indeed crossed. The surprise in finding our new bridge awaiting us will not be surpassed if it is folded up and only rolled out again for next year’s spring walk!
Given how wet February had been so far nobody came in their 5 inch heels though the dainty footwear of some lost the challenge of the muddy paths. The the death of a local young person in their seventies ruled out “The Old Thatch” as a venue for our post walk meal and chat. The dozen or so who headed to Carewswood instead did not face disappointment. Prompt and friendly service, tasty food and an apple-crumble to-die-for awaited. The chat was lively with intriguing reports of renewal in some east Cork parishes!!!
The chronic overachievers on the walk were bursting to answer any questions on our leader’s handout. In order to save the blushes of others the questions remained unput.
Much praise is due to Anne Durity for leading us and not being daunted when the post walk venue fell through.

P.S. By the way, the Fainin Well is in fact a bullaun stone.
