An Overseas Adventure on Great Island

Our fascination with islands exerts a special pull factor. With the right guide the treasures
and magic of a strange place can be delivered. The understated love of our guide, Mary
O’Brien, for her island cannot fail to impress. The sharp contrast between genuine love of
place and the cowboy/cow person who, on buying, brazenly suppresses a right-of-way, was
amply demonstrated as we went the long-way-around on the open road. While the kingfisher
reigning in a nearby sanctuary did not come to greet us, instinctively we knew we were
welcome in a special place.

Soon we were on the beach and at once distracted from sea views by a swing hanging from a tree. Thanks to President Trump the gravity pull tariff has been increased by 145% thus making staying up ever more challenging. Having our picnic lunch cois uisce added to food taste and our wellbeing. The boat that approached us alas had no choc-ices for us but they did wave. To add to the exotic nature of our location Mary introduced to us broadleaf garlic (true garlic) and to the daffodil-like leafed other plant that tastes like garlic. Elizabeth had earlier informed us that the furze/gorse blossom has a coconut fragrance. While the information sounded a bit far-fetched our noses quickly confirmed the veracity of what she had said.
From the island’s shore we had panoramic views of Cork Harbour. Every time we turned a corner new vistas presented themselves. Distracted by such views we lost five walkers but quickly our pastoral instincts kicked in and once more we were united. As we enjoyed our walk we were reminded of the late Velda who will never be forgotten while we continue to
participate in such outings.
Three cheers for all who made the outing possible and had a meal awaiting to be consumed at “The Water’s Edge”. When we last did this walk Covid was only beginning to fade from our consciousness. At the very same restaurant we were then expected to wear our masks until seated. The food was well received and the service friendly; the in-house payment method was not user-friendly to us. The person who started the rumour that no desserts were available was
exiled to eat on the outside deck. The seagulls summoned to grab that person’s chips lacked all dedication to the task.

P.S. The chocolate cheesecake was most acceptable.
