Enjoying Youghal By the Sea

Even without buckets and spades Youghal seemed to have it all and when the sun shone it ticked many boxes. Memories of steam-train excursions will always inform the backward glance of those who came to Youghal by the big “Puff, Puff” fadó fadó.
When Clare Shelly, our guide, marshalled us in the carpark at the town end of Front Strand the east wind held off and the sun upped its game. Perhaps it was boardwalk enhanced but a noticeable vigour in the step of all was matched by smiling faces and animated laughter. It was clear we were fast-tracking to Tír na nÓg. The energy in the group was to walk further but lunch beckoned in Clancy’s. The excellent food, its presentation and welcoming service
made pencilling-in a return visit a must. On rising from the table a huge life-sized photo of a steam engine that covered the wall behind us added a sprinkle of nostalgia that enhanced the outing with a high note ending.
Much thanks to all who came and to all who made it possible.
