This year, the Education Centre Network celebrates the 50 th anniversary of its
foundation. Education Centres throughout the country have provided invaluablsupport and services to teachers throughout this period. Many of you have availed of
the facilities at Cork and West Cork Centres and indeed some of you have probably
been involved in providing those services through delivering courses or serving on
committees.
There are at present 21 full time and 7 part time Education Centres in the country but
it all began in 1973 with 10 Teacher centres being set up – Cork being one of them.
ESCI – the umbrella body for Centres – intend printing a booklet/magazine detailing
the memories of these 10 Centres. Cork Education Support Centre is hoping that
some retired teacher might contribute a short article/couple of paragraphs of their
memories of the ‘olden days’ of our Centre – from Anglesea St. to Crawford Gallery,
Patrick’s Quay and eventually to the Mardyke. Bart Bambury, our Director of almost
30 years, sadly passed away and so lots of memories were unrecorded. It is hoped
that the more ’senior’ members might share memories of the early days …setting up
the Centre from Teacher Associations’ in the city/county in the early 1970’s,
photos/brochures for summer courses, anecdotal/funny stories ( nothing libellous!!)
… some might even have been tutors/served on the Management committee etc.
Anything not used could be included in Cork’s own 50 th celebration event in late
Autumn when we hope to do our own little booklet /have an exhibition of artefacts
etc. Some may have memories of the part time West Cork Centre before it became
fulltime in the early 2000’s. There was a part time centre in the North Cork area also
in the very early days.
More details of Cork Education Centre’s 50 th celebrations will follow after the
summer.
