Lúthchleasa Bhunscoileanna Chorcaí

May 30th, 2024 MTU Munster Technological University

The centenary sports event took place on Thursday, May 30th in MTU. This was truly a memorable day for all involved. The organisers did a fantastic job in organising stewards and participants in advance of the day. There was excellent teamwork and cooperation which ensured the smooth running of a very busy schedule. Well done to all on a superb job.

Many of our RTAI members volunteered on the day and their support was greatly appreciated by the organising committee. This is a great day out, a very busy one, but thoroughly enjoyable. We were lucky with the weather as the rain stayed off and it wasn’t too hot either.

Lúthchleasa Bhunscoileanna Chorcaí  is an annual track-and-field athletics event for primary school children. Beginning in 1924, Cork Primary School Sports, originally running in the Mardyke, later Páirc Uí Chaoimh and now the track at Munster Technological University (MTU), the event has long been an unforgettable experience for tens of thousands of Cork children.

The inaugural staging of an event for children with Additional Needs in UCC last year will now become a permanent fixture on the calendar.

This is now the largest one-day children’s athletics event in Europe, bringing thousands of ambitious young athletes to race every year.
