Harper’s Island…… read all about it!

Though somewhat forlorn that Ger didn’t sing a melody or Clare accompany le ceol
binn na cruite in memory of the 16th Century former owners and Professional
Harpers, the O’Cahill Family, all 40 of us sallied forward! The bright sunshine and
clear skies of Harper’s Island soon raised our spirits on a mid January morning.
We entered one of two Bird Hides on the Island which was intriguing with its
screened views and fascinating pictures of birds covering the walls. Shortly
afterwards, we passed the old farmhouse of the Fitzgerald Family who lived on the
Island until the 1980’s when the whole 69 acres farm was bought by Cork County
Council for the construction of the N25 between Cork and Midleton.
While appearing a much smaller island now, it still retains its Island magic with sea,
birds, wildlife, fauna, and sense of tranquillity. It is a hidden gem in Cork’s Crown.
On the return journey to our cars we stopped at the Elm Tree Restaurant for
sustenance. Nourishment, we certainly received! A delicious lunch was served to all
with friendly smiles and flaithiúil portions. An Elm Tree abú! Ger, Clare, Martin, Mags abú freisin for shepherding the flock so well!
