The Perfect Combination
10.30 on Thursday, February 13th had c. 20 RTAI walkers on The Marina, “champing at the bit” to be off. The Arctic wind that blew across from Tivoli and Glounthaune motivated the walkers to get unruly and at pace. Our leader, Clare, filled us in on some historic facts of where we trod. However, the combination of cold and the diuretic effect of Cortado’s excellent teas and coffees made the location of the “leithreas poiblí”/“Tigh an Asail” of some interest. Shock, horror, shock. Then when it was discovered that Cork City Council, having wrought miracles on the Blackrock Greenway, had a blind spot re a basic need, the suggestion that “You Know Who” might sign an Executive Order to install a toilet or two was dismissed if a tad reluctantly. At the same time the appreciation of the great work done on what was a somewhat forgotten amenity not that long ago was on many lips.
Walking along the old Passage Railway Line we climbed to the footbridge that took us over the main road that leads to the Tunnel. We walked on, skirting the estuary of the Douglas river. We passed behind the houses on Jacobs Island and headed for Blackrock Castle. There, some walkers sought “comfort asylum” and the hospitality of the restaurant was not found wanting. On we trod and as Cortado came into view we knew we had walked 11 km or so.
Part 2 of the Morning’s Adventure unfolded at “The Black Market”. Located at the Páirc Uí Chaoimh end of Monahan Road, it’s a combination of food outlets that provide very acceptable and somewhat exotic fare in a comfortable- sit where you wish – cave-like surrounds. The various menus mentioned Serbian and Bulgarian dishes and also enchiladas, burritos, pizzas, desserts, coffees etc. etc. Such culinary delights provided plenty to share and much to discuss.
Clare had combined a worthy walk and topped it off with an exotic eating experience. Maith í féin. A further highlight of the day was based on a combination of numbers between 3 and 9. Perhaps a memo to the City Council might bring learnings?! Then we would not need to dream
of Executive Orders from afar!
