Our walk and party, not eclipsed at Knockadoon

Our annual visit to Knockadoon is by now well established and a highlight of our walking calendar. Surely not one of us believes that the Knockadoon outing and the major eclipse of the sun was a mere coincidence. Given the hard work and planning put in by our hostess, rumours were a buzz that Mary organised the eclipse also. Given the effort to make all feel at home while on holiday as it were, fixing the eclipse was probably the easier of the dual challenges. Let them cry their eyes out in Clonakilty or in an even wetter Castletownbere, we walked in sunshine with a most welcome gentle sea breeze.

Walking numbers were at a maximum with a long list on standby. Under Mary Cahill’s direction willing volunteers rally to the flag to help and treats are baked by a supporting network.

Derry Keogh and Kay McEnery took charge of the walk with a novel variation to enthuse new and repeat walkers. Our walk leaders kept a close eye on our energy levels as we walked in unaccustomed heat and they sensed when we needed a breather.

Meanwhile, back at base camp the burco boiler was plugged in awaiting a thirsty invasion of tea and coffee drinkers. Homemade soup in two varieties was on the hob reaching perfection. It’s wonderful how the house seemed to expand and make room for all. As to be expected, a massive amount of washing up was called for, having fed the multitude. How wonderful to relate that with the right equipment – an apron and high-end tea towel -one wipe and the job was done!!  Some support crew stood in awe and even one captured the image as proof.

As our happy outing came to an end, the clouds began to gather to obscure the sun eclipse. Clearly Mary was now off duty and enjoying a well-deserved rest.
