Kilkenny was our destination for this year’s Irish trip for 30 Cork RTA members and spouses, with the Rivercourt hotel our base, a wise choice indeed. With great food, good rooms, parking and a more than helpful staff we happily explored the city on foot.
The Castle, Design Centre, Butler House, Rothe House and gardens, Black Abbey, St Canice’s Cathedral, and the Medieval Mile museum all revealed some facet of the Marble City’s fascinating history from the 1200s onwards. A local guide added another layer of interesting facts of a city that withstood the Black Death, Reformation challenges, Oliver Cromwell’s destruction, witch hunts and more besides.
But social history through the ages, especially in Rothe House was a stand out feature also. 21stC retail therapy wasn’t forgotten with some striking purchases now being worn Leeside. After dinner each evening some gathered for impromptu singsongs and card playing in a room set aside for us by the hotel.
We were delighted to be joined by Marion Ryan, vice president of RTAI and looking forward to welcoming her to Cork in 2027. I can’t recommend Kilkenny enough for a short break full of variety, activities to do, great food and accommodation choices. But bring the walking shoes.
