Let Willie Fitzgerald be praised. He discovered for us and led us at Shehymore Highland Park. It is set deep in less trodden West Cork. Thankfully that clever person in the sky of Google Maps helped get us there in good time. We set off walking punctually at 10.30am. As well as walking for the fun of it we were also supporting a tourist initiative. A local sheep farmer, on his own land, has laid out a carpark, helpful signage and three routes in the Shehy Mountain Range. Ever ambitious for the honours course we challenged ourselves against the most difficult route.
We were not discouraged by the word “STRENUOUS” in the walk’s grade description. Happy to relate all made it to the finish unscathed. It was not always easy-going but the buzz of achievement was heightened. There was widespread praise for the farmer and his welcome farm-based amenity park and nobody begrudged the 5 euro per head for his enterprise.
The weather was mild but the light drizzle/mist ensured we did not get the panoramic views a clearer day might offer. With our appetites sharpened by exertion we made quick work of downing our grub when Willie called “Picnic Time”.
There was almost a sense of alarm that finding a place for a post-walk meal was a greater challenge than expected. Mai Fitz’s in Lissarda proved perfect for our needs. Our meal was enhanced by the company of Veronica and Mary, who made the long journey to experience a taste of “our” Shehy Mountains. We are blessed when they lead us on “their” Déise walks.
Willie has discovered yet another winner. Lead on! We are right behind you.
