Though the day was a tad gloomy, weather-wise, to start, spirits were high among the twenty-three happy amblers who gathered at the Coachford Greenway on the 20th of October.
This annual amble, a flat, linear walk organised by Mary Tobin, is a very popular one. It is a peaceful and scenic walk along the banks of Inniscarra lake, a manmade lake created by the building of the hydroelectric dam at Inniscarra. This project commenced in 1953, the lake itself was created in 1957 and is now home to perch, carp, bream and pike among other species of fish.
Consequently, we weren’t the only ones enjoying the tranquil location that morning as there were some very keen anglers partaking in a Coarse Fishing competition also.
The weather Gods were on our side and the morning remained mild and dry for the duration of the approximately 5k walk.
The all-important post amble refreshments were provided by the ever reliable Boathouse restaurant in Coachford. From past experience, the proprietors of the Boathouse knew how popular their lunch menu is with the retired teachers so they arranged dining facilities with their neighbour, Paddy Mac’s bar. It was a marriage made in heaven—delicious food and delightful cakes consumed in cosy surroundings near a lovely warm stove.
Míle buíochas to Mary for all the organisation, and thanks to Martin for the photos!
Thanks to Geraldine for the cuntas.
