Once upon a time late August brought stomach butterflies with the imminent reopening of schools. The weather usually picked up and mid-term was beyond the horizon. Not anymore one is happy to relate. In early September RTAI walks swing back into action. Generous volunteers introduce us to the Great Outdoors where they themselves love to ramble. How nice to hear that those who guide us to new pastures often find that their own enjoyment is enhanced. To the newcomers’ surprise and wonder, finding hidden wonderlands is often near at hand.

With banks, post offices, shops etc. closing just about everywhere, the RTAI network is in smashing good health. Margaret O’Flynn has unveiled more than a few of East Cork’s hidden gems to us grateful members. She does not spare herself to ensure a happy outing. She led us to Ballyannan Woods near Midleton on September 8th. The sun shone most of the way and when it rained Margaret had a bridge in place, under which we sheltered when we most needed it. Ballyannan Woods are 25 hectares of mature mixed woodland set beside an ever-changing background of the Owenacurra Estuary. It has a far-away from noise and urban bustle feel about it while being so close to the amenities of Midleton.
The staff of the Talbot Hotel, Midleton, greeted us for lunch and their service was attentive and friendly. Martin’s photos, with their great clarity thanks to his skill, ensure our happy memories of the day will live on. Without a doubt we have redeemed September, it’s now ours to enjoy.
