Safety in the home Community Garda talk

April 14th, 2026

The following are some of the main safety guidelines

Get a Ring doorbell (camera records who’s outside) and sensor lights. Age Action will provide for vulnerable older people.

Keep gate closed, car inside and always locked.

Get all expensive personal stuff engraved with postcode. Can’t be sold on if stolen.

House alarms are a must.

If walking in a built up area, shopping centre, keep head up, looking around always, never down at a phone. You’ll stand out as an observant person, thieves will avoid you.

Buy a Faraday pouch/box for modern car keys, car shop or online will have them (it breaks the signal between car and key). Leave inside house, far away from car.

Avoid walking alone by night. Handbags under table in eg a café,not on a chair.

Phone theft is huge, never leave it in car, find its unique IMEI(ID) number, give that to a family member so it’s available to Gardaí if stolen.

10% of value of m bikes should be spent on a good lock.

Aggressive begging is illegal, report asap. Never respond to taunts on the street or get involved in an incident. Report anything suspicious, don’t hesitate or feel foolish, ring 999 always, not a Garda station.

Take taxi badge/plate before a journey.

Have a coloured(not black/white) photocopy of passport when abroad in case actual one is stolen. It can be scanned at airport on way home.

If involved in a car accident, photo other car’s reg/,tax/insurance discs and the driver in case they leave fast. Phone 999 and report asap.
